Dr. Mark Argo has been an EODDS volunteer since 2010. We asked him a few questions about his experience as a volunteer.
What is the most rewarding part of being an EODDS volunteer?
The people we serve make our efforts totally worth it! By the time they have begun their program and get to us, they are so appreciative of the life-changing effects that an improved smile can make for them. Often, our entire team gets a hug, and many times shares a happy tear, as we complete their treatment.
Describe an EODDS success story at your practice.
I recall one client who began with us a couple years ago, who in the beginning seemed to be quiet and had a shy attitude, and nervous of us at the dental office. As we began to plan her treatment, showing her how to care for her new dental work and provided gentle care for her, she began to change her demeanor.
She later stated that in all her previous dental experiences, she always felt ashamed and felt judged about her lack of dental care. By the end of her treatment with us, she obviously gained self-confidence and a sense of pride about herself that was quite apparent and pleasant.
That feeling she developed was very satisfying for me, as I feel we helped change her life.
What would you say to other dentists who are not currently volunteers?
I would love for every dental professional to consider volunteering their talents somewhere, even helping one or two people each year. We are all consumed with the responsibilities of our families, our daily jobs, our practices and this is top priority for us to protect, for sure. However, I have found it most satisfying to help others who truly need our help.
